Understanding your test results
After successful collection and processing of your cord blood sample, you will receive a letter telling you the volume of blood collected and the volume stored. Thes numbers differ because we remove the red cells and excess plasma during the processing, then add back some plasma as well as some other fluids (such as the chemicals that protect the cells during freezing). The final volume is usually around 40 mls, which is stored in two separate cryopreservation bags - we do this so that the sample can be used more than once, particularly once effective stem cell expansion methods become available.
If there are any problems with the sample then we will contact you immediately, by phone or in writing or both. These problems may include problems with the paperwork, problems with the test result for the sample, or problems with the maternal test results. To find out more about these, click on the links in the box at the right of screen.
One recurring problem we see is with sample labelling. The Collection kit includes preprinted labels for all the samples, but in the rush and excitement after birth these sometimes get left off. Unfortunately, lack of labelling of the cord blood sample itself can have very serious consequences for future use of that sample, while unlabelled maternal blood samples will have to be recollected. If at all possible, we recommend that you (mother and/or father) check on the labelling of all the samples before they are given to the courier.
A relationship over 18 years...
Of course, storing the sample is only the beginning. Biocell will keep you up to date with the latest advances in stem cell research and therapies, both through this website and through our regular email newsletters - if we haven't got you email address on file, or if you change email addresses, let us know at info@biocell.com.au.
It is also important that you let us know when you move so that we can keep our records up to date. Write to us or email us with your new address and contact details, or use this website (click here to contact us).
